If you’re a rider that likes to adjust seat height or bar position from time to time, chances are you’ll make the adjustment and move along. Next time, check to see if the bolt has any grease on it (if it was ever there to begin with). If not, put a small amount on said bolt and move on with your life. This is not a detail but a fundamental. While there are a few exceptions (some need anti-seize or thread lock), virtually every bolt needs grease. Why? It optimizes the interaction of the threads of the bolt with the opposing surface. Grease and oil are actually pretty fascinating. There are grease geeks out there that make unique lubricants for almost every part of a bike. Shimano has the cool market cornered with Special Grease (thanks CC for the review), which is so badass they don’t even list it on their ridiculously detailed site. Phil Wood is great stuff, Slick Honey is beautiful with bearings, and of course you just know Campagnolo has their own formula. Park Tool makes this, and Pedro’s makes that. Next time you go to your LBS, just look at how many types of chain oil they carry, it’s quite impressive really. So, next time you’re in there, grab some grease. Your bolts thank you in advance.
